Snow!

In the early morning on the 26th, we got about eight inches of snow. It was expected, but because we don’t get a lot of snow here, we were unprepared for what happened.

We ended up snowed in for about twenty-four hours, and the power was out for 42 hours. The landline is still out. We already don’t have heat in the house, so really it was just more frivolous creature comforts we were missing, plus lights. The kittens though living in the dark for 2 days was great. I did not.

We kept small devices charged in my car and I did a lot of reading. Internet was barely strong enough via data connection to chat on messenger. I was almost bored enough to start crocheting a new blanket.

The worst part of all this was for my aquarium. Without heat, the temp dropped down into the very low 60’s, maybe lower. My fish are tropical, so I wasn’t sure they would survive.

When the power did come back on, Herman was on her back, barely breathing. I immediately started replacing about 6 gallons of tank water with hot water to raise the temp into the low 70’s over the course of an hour. I also moved Herman into the floating Betta log so she’d hopefully get more oxygen as well as warmer water.

After raising the temp to about 73°, I let the heater do the rest. Herman stayed in the log for 14 hours, then finally started swimming around the tank. She seems to be okay now.

I lost one dwarf pencilfish and maybe a danio, but I still have quite a few shrimp, my snails are active, and my super pregnant platy looks even bigger.

I’ve also ordered mylar blankets and a battery operated air pump in case this happens again.
