So on the Twitters, my internet buddy (??) Eddie posted this image, above, and it makes me want to rant about Star Trek and the directions the new shows are taking.
Star Trek has historically been a family show that’s suitable for all members of the family. Little kids, moms, dads, grandparents, weird Uncle Joey. Suitable for everyone. It was always a little cheesy but it was also always beautifully optimistic. Sometimes bad things happened, but overall the show was honestly pretty uplifting.
And then Discovery came out and the people were torn between loving it and hating it. I’m a hater. I think that while it’s great they’ve included gay people, they’ve gone out of their way to make the show flashier and more intense in just about every way possible. Dazzling special effects, and crude language are shoved into your face so hard you choke on them.
People who loved the JJ Abrams interpretation of the more recent Star Trek movies are on board with these new limit-pushing episodes. But for people like me, this isn’t real Star Trek. It’s some flashy, brash imposter who is tarnishing the friendly and welcoming face Star Trek used to have.
Discovery has featured the word “fuck” and the above snippet in the image implies the newest offering, Picard, will also be less family friendly by way of language and possibly other things. I have nothing against the word “fuck.” I say it all the time. I sometimes curse very colorfully… But Star Trek is not the appropriate place to do this. And I refuse to believe that a man as classy and wonderful as Sir Patrick Stewart believes that this is appropriate for the character a lot of us grew up watching with our families.
I had a dream the other day while napping that was super crazy. I was in high school, but my school was located on a fairgrounds. Everyone hated me. I had no friends, this rich girl constantly attacked me. Life was not good.
I was walking around the livestock barns one afternoon when all of a sudden a huge black bull charged me out of nowhere, threw me into the air, then grabbed me by the head with his teeth. I ended up next to a fence and the bull just kept coming. I thought I was going to die, but then Danny Trejo got a friend to help distract the bull, helped me through the fence, and got me to safety. I had a concussion and several broken bones.
After that I went to the drama room to hide out a while. I saw a friend there and I stayed way too late, missing the bus home. While I was trying to find a ride, someone asked why I didn’t just drive my car home. But I don’t have a car. Except I did. My dad had built me a big purple Trans Am (even though he was dead) and it was waiting for me.
As I approached the car, it wasn’t a car at all. It was a big purple yacht called the Revenge of the Squid with squids carved all over it.
The rich girl who made me life hell claimed the yacht was for her and refused to get off my boat, so I threw her overboard. Then I went sailing with the two people that took care of me. 🙂
I bought myself a Raspberry Pi 3 for Christmas last year, giving my old 2 to my mom to work as a home theater setup.
And for the most part, my 3 has operated flawlessly.
But when I’m running Kodi, it gets hot – not just the “getting kind of warm” icon on screen but the one that’s red all the way to the top. And when it stays that way, it slows way down, freezes, and sometimes crashes. No Bueno.
I also (I finally tracked the cause down to some recent updates) had a glitch where Kodi was suffering some really rough video playback. Took a few days on our frustratingly slow internet, but I eventually made a fresh installation of Raspbian, installed Kodi and Deluge, and left everything else as is. Got that rough playback cleared up!
Anyway, I ordered this fan – it’s teensy tiny. I think 30mm? My case isn’t set up to house a fan, so I grabbed a drill, made a few holes in the lid, and mounted it. Works great too. I haven’t seen that little red thermometer once after it got cooled down!
My Pi is happy and healthy again, and I’ve rediscovered podcasts. I saved about two dozen I want to check out, finished one (Missing Richard Simmons – really guys, let the poor man enjoy retirement!), and have been desperately trying to catch up on another (Sawbones- check it out, it’s so funny and you’ll learn stuff too!).
